Culture in Marbella
If you think Europe’s favourite lifestyle destination offers sport, leisure, nightlife and a beautiful natural setting bathed in sunshine you’d be right. If you think there’s no more, you’d be wrong.
The Costa del Sol may be primarily associated with summer pastimes such as sunbathing, golf, beach clubs and lounging by the swimming pool, but thanks to a truly impressive natural and cultural setting there really is so much more to enjoy.
This includes explorations that include a focus on gastronomy, nature, hiking in the mountains, extreme sports, visiting country villages and also historic cities such as nearby Málaga, which traces it origins to Phoenician settlers and as such is one of the oldest cities in Europe.
Málaga
Enter the regional capital and you see it all before you: a Moorish castle on top of the hill overlooking the city, a Roman amphitheatre, Baroque monuments and churches, sleek modern offices and also original Phoenician town wall sections. Málaga is a mosaic of cultures and history.
The city has also become famous for its beautiful architecture, its fine gastronomy and one of the best offers of museums in Southern Europe, with everything from art and fashion to furnishing and even cars.
Málaga is also home to the elegant Teatro Cervantes, home to a rich annual calendar of musical and cultural events that can range from modern dance and classical ballet to opera, flamenco and concerts by famous international artists.
Marbella
In fact, summer on the Costa del Sol brings with it a whole range of concerts and musical festivals, from Málaga in the east to Estepona in the west, including the now-famous Starlight Festival, whose atmospheric outdoor setting plays host to three months of concerts and events.
Marbella too has a theatre, museums, beautiful historic buildings and churches, as well as lively schedule of events that can range from classically cultural to informational and purely entertaining. Check out our listing of upcoming events and choose the ones for your Marbella visit.
